Awards

 Individual trophies will be given to the male and female winners of each age group. A team trophy will be given to the Walk-A-Thon team that raises the most donations.

Individual Winners Trophy

Walkers can begin their walk any time between 10:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The laps do not have to be done all at one time.  Relax and do them throughout the day.  Walkers will count their laps themselves. When finished, they have their Laps recorded and verified.  After the day is over, they fill out the Pledge Sheet and collect the donations from their sponsors. For more specific information, see the "Tips and Advice" below.

Tips and advice

1. Set a goal for the number of miles/laps you will walk - for instance 3 miles.  A lap is 1/4 mile.

2. Make a list of friends, family, co-workers,etc. you can get to sponsor you in the Walk-A-Thon

3. Send out a letter or telephone prospective sponsors. Use the sample letter and be sure to personalize it with a hand-written note at the bottom.  

   A. Sponsors can give you a donation your walk.

   B. Sponsors can also just choose to make a donation to Yellow Mountain.

5. On June 23, come to the Lees-Mc Rae track and walk between 10:15 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. and walk as many miles/laps as you can. (NOTE: You do not need to walk continuously. Take breaks and rest throughout the day in order to get your maximum number of miles/laps in).

6. No Pets can be allowed, due to the crowd congestion and participant activity.

Packet Pick-up

Packets can be picked up between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at Trackside.  Registration fees can be paid at this time.  Lockers and showers are available for your use in the Field House. Do not enter by the front door. Use the Right Side door of the Field House.  You are guests of Lees-McRae, so please take care of the area and remove all of your trash.  DO NOT ENTER THE GYM.

 

Schedule

   7:30 - 9:00 a.m.: Pick up packets

   9:00 - Deadline for on-site 5K registration   

   9:10 5K Start on Track

Individual Winners Trophy

  

Description of Course

1. Start on gravel road between the track and practice soccer field. Run behind the field house onto the back of the parking lot to Hickory Nut Gap Road (0.2 miles).  TURN LEFT.  RUNNERS WILL STAY ON HICKORY NUT GAP ROAD UNTIL THEY HAVE MADE THE LOOP AND RETURNED TO THIS POINT.

2. RUNNERS WILL STAY ON HICKORY NUT GAP ROAD UNTIL THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE LOOP AND RETURNED TO THE BACK OF THE PARKING LOT.

3. The first WATER TABLE at the 0.8 mile mark.

4. The first Mile Mark is at Wildcat Road.

5. Continue up to the Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church parking lot (1.5 miles). TURN INTO PARKING LOT AND LOOP BEHIND THE CONES UNTIL YOU RE-ENTER HICKORY NUT GAP ROAD.  TURN LEFT DOWNHILL TO THE FIELD HOUSE PARKING LOT

6. TURN RIGHT AND CONTINUE TO THE GRAVEL ROAD.  FOLLOW THE MARKED LINE.  It will run behind the trailer.  TURN RIGHT TOWARD THE DOUBLE GATES AT THE TRACK AND ONTO THE TRACK.  STAY IN LANES 1, 2 OR 3.  RACE TO FINISH LINE (THE STEEPLECHASE WATER HAZARD).

7. CONTINUE INTO THE CHUTE MARKED BY HURDLES.

8. SURRENDER YOUR NUMBER AND RECEIVE A FINISH CARD.

Awards

The trophies are professionally made by Yellow Mountain clients.

Tips and advice

1. Hydrate 48 hours ahead.

2. Be on time.

3. Pick up your packet the day of the race at the track.  Be prepared to pay any unpaid fees.

4. Cool down properly.

5. Hydrate after the race.

Water will be provided free.  A food concession stand will also be available for lunch.

Registration

The registration fee is $25 (Additional donations are welcome). The Registration Fee includes a tee shirt made by Yellow Mountain..The fee can be paid when registering on-line with PayPal (Credit card) or with cash, check or credit card when registering on event day. There are 2 ways to bid:

1. Over the internet between April 22 and 8:00 a.m., June 20.

The internet web site will give you the most up-to-date listing of all the auction items, plus the ability to bid on them.  To visit the web site after April 22,  

2. At the Mountain Glen Golf Club on June 22.

There will be table displays and bidding sheets for each auction item in the clubhouse. Bidding is from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. To bid, add your name to the bidding sheet with your bid. The bid must be higher than all others on the sheet as of that time.  You can add another bid on the same or other items at any time and as many time as you want until 7:45.

The items will be awarded to the highest bidder at 7:45 p.m.  Payment can be made with cash, check or credit card.

Seminar - Physical Conditioning Techniques as Used by the NFL

10:15 to 12:15 p.m.

Jeremy Boone, the Off-Season Speed and Conditioning Coach for the NFL's Carolina Panthers, will conduct the session. Emphasis will be on "Learn by Doing".  The seminar will be divided into 6 segments of 20 minutes each. Each segment will be dedicated to a different age group (2-13, 14-19, 20-30, 31-50, 51+)with techniques appropriate for that age.  The last session, "Run Faster by Changing Directions" will be designed for coaches and athletes already in excellent condition and will contain vigorous exercises.

Audience members can perform the techniques in their age group segment as their current conditioning will permit.  Audience members can also just observe.  Observation is free, while a donation of $5 or more is requested of participants.

Jeremy is the author of 2 popular books on his philosophies, which will be available for purchase.  He will also offer conversation and book signing.

Individual and Team Photographs

Mark Houde, top sports photographer from Carolina Sports Photography, will be taking both individual and group photos throughout the events.  Participants can also pose with costumed characters.  Photos will be available after the event over the internet. For sample photos, .

 

 

Concessions will be provided at Trackside by the Avery County Touchdown Club and the Ugly Mug Restaurant.  The menu includes choice of hot dogs, hamburgers or pizza slice, chips and soft drink ($5) and biscuit ($2), pastries from the Stick Boy Bakery in Boone ($2), Italian Ice - 8 flavors ($3) coffee ($1) and soft drink ($1).

 

Alan Yawn, Area Director of High-Country YoungLife, will MC the event and provide music throughout the day.  

 

There will also be costumed characters to pose with the event attendees, as well as a 7+ foot GREAT basketball player, Tommy Burleson (North Carolina State).

 

Medical professionals from the Williams YMCA of Avery Co. will be on-site.  They are fully certified and will be at each water station, at Trackside, and on the 5K and FunRun courses in a vehicle.
