Yellow Mountain Enterprises is a 501-C3 non-profit organization located in Newland, North Carolina, serving consumers living in Avery county. Yellow Mountain Enterprises operates under the umbrella of Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens, Inc. AAEC was formed in 1976 when a survey was taken in Avery County to determine the need for services of Developmentally Disabled citizens. Twenty-eight prospective consumers were identified and a Board was formed to create a program which would promote positive life experiences and opportunities for adults with Developmental Disabilities. Our goal is to teach our consumers to become as independent as possible and to live in the least restrictive environment possible. Our consumers earn wages from various programs which currently include a thrift store, yard crew, greenhouse activities, trophy & plaque production, housekeeping and cooking classes as they train for employment, develop self-esteem and have a safe place to socialize with their peers.

Yellow Mountain Enterprises accomplishments include eight clients who have worked hard at getting jobs in the community through our Supported Employment program. They enjoy a regular work schedule and paycheck! One client was able to get his driver's license and transports himself to work! All of our consumers are proud of their work, the crafts they make and their accomplishments. See our About page for more details.

Avery County Group Home also operates under the umbrella of Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens, Inc and is located in the town of Newland, North Carolina. The group home has the capacity to serve 6 consumers. See our About page for more details.

AAEC is governed by a Board of ten volunteer individuals who have strong commitments to the success of our program - two have children in the program - three have been board members for over 15 years.
